After flying Guarulhos for most of my life as a connecting point from Brazil, the São Paulo airport was always stuck on my trough. The largest city there doesn’t have an airport of the level of Miami, New York, Paris or London, but why?
Brazilian airports have never been as big as hubs that you see in the rest of the world and in developed country. In the last years though the flying became a lot more affordable in the country but with no parallel infrastructure to support it.

How the World Cup and Olympic games changed that
The world events that happened in Brazil required the country to expand the infrastructure, different than the us where airports can be privately owned, city owned, or owned by whomever, in Brazil its all Federal state owned which now has been privatizing the management of some of them.
After the games I had a couple of trips to Brazil and am glad to say that the changes made for the sport events, made it a first class airport with the shinny brand new Terminal 4 for most of international flights. The other older terminals have been getting a lips stick.
